French Retail Giants Acknowledge Cyberattack Leading to Customer Data Breach
Several popular French retailers, including Boulanger and Cultura, recently confirmed that they were the victims of a cyberattack that led to customer data theft. The attack occurred in early September 2024, with hackers successfully infiltrating systems and stealing sensitive customer information. Boulanger, a well-known electronics and appliance retailer, revealed that customer data, such as delivery addresses, was compromised. However, the company emphasized that no financial or banking details were affected, and they have since enhanced their security measures.
Cultura, another affected retailer specializing in books, arts, and leisure products, confirmed that approximately 1.5 million customer records were exposed. These records included names, email addresses, phone numbers, and order details. Similar to Boulanger, Cultura also assured customers that no passwords or banking information were accessed during the breach.
The attacks were reportedly carried out by a hacker going by the alias “horrormar44,” who claimed responsibility and leaked samples of the stolen data on forums. The retailers have since notified affected customers and initiated investigations, while also filing complaints with local authorities.
These breaches underscore the increasing threats faced by retailers in today’s digital age, where customer data is frequently targeted by malicious actors. Retailers must continuously enhance their security practices to mitigate risks and protect customer information from future breaches.
