Indian Authorities and Binance Team Up to Bust $47 Million Gaming App Scam

Indian authorities, specifically the Enforcement Directorate (ED), have collaborated with Binance to dismantle a $47 million scam linked to the Fiewin gaming app. This app lured users into depositing money under the pretext of earning through mini-games and rewards, only for users to later find that their funds were trapped with no way to withdraw them.

The ED arrested four individuals in connection with the fraudulent operation. The Fiewin scam reportedly siphoned off over ₹400 crore ($47.6M) from unsuspecting victims by pushing users to top up their in-app wallets and participate in online games with the promise of easy returns. The funds were then laundered through a complex network involving cryptocurrency wallets and international money transfers, making tracking more challenging.

Binance’s Financial Intelligence Unit (FIU) played a pivotal role by providing critical intelligence that helped authorities trace the stolen funds and uncover the broader fraud network. This collaboration with Binance was instrumental in connecting the dots between the digital wallets used by scammers and the laundering operation across different borders. Binance’s involvement is part of its efforts to build better relations with regulators and combat financial crimes as it seeks to enhance its image after past controversies in India, including issues with non-compliance with anti-money laundering regulations.

This incident highlights the growing use of digital platforms for financial fraud and the need for robust partnerships between public and private sectors to tackle such complex crimes. The ED and Binance continue to work together to further unravel the criminal network and recover lost funds, underscoring the importance of collaborative efforts in dealing with rising financial crime linked to digital assets and platforms.
